Innovation Optogenetics

Implantable optogenetic microstimulation:

Optogenetics - the optical control of genetically modified cells with light - is a rapidly developing approach that is revolutionizing the life sciences with photonic methods.

In contrast to the established, clinically widespread electrical cell stimulation (cochlear implant, cardiac pacemaker, deep brain stimulation), optogenetics allows cell type-specific and spatially confined optical control of cell activity.

Medical device oCI

Cochlear implants are prostheses that enable the deaf to hear again.

The electric cochlea implant (eCI) already allows hearing impaired people to participate in vocal communication in their daily lives again.
There are more than 700,000 eCI users worldwide.

The bottleneck of hearing with an electrical cochlear implant is the broad spread of the current stimulus in the cochlea.
If one compares the cochlea in the inner ear with a spiral staircase where each step corresponds to a pitch, each of the 12-24 eCI electrodes activates auditory nerve cells over an entire landing.
This makes it difficult for eCI users to understand speech in noisy environments and to recognize melodies.

Our optical cochlear implant (oCI) promises a fundamental improvement in hearing.

With our technology, we densely integrate a large number of micro-scale emitters to stimulate the optogenetically altered auditory nerve.
This enables us to achieve an unprecedented spatial resolution or in other words to address the individual steps of the staircase again.
Thus, the oCI can transmit more spectral information about the sound. We hope that this will give patients more natural hearing, more pleasure in melodies and better speech understanding in background noise.

In order to get an impression of what music sounds like with a cochlear implant, an audio example of electrical stimulation (8 channels) and optical stimulation (128 channels) can be found below the respective illustrations. These audio examples were generated using standard noise-vocoding with AngleSim and do not claim to fully represent the actual perception of an individual CI patient.
